Sawmill Creek

Sawmill Creek has provided a home and spawning grounds for our finned friends throughout Haines history.  Some of our elders remember fishing and playing in Sawmill Creek as children.  As Haines grew, the creek was rerouted, channeled and mostly forgotten, but it still provides a good place for salmon and sportfish to live and grow.  We’d like to help restore the creek to its former glory: a nice place to walk, play, and fish.  Takshanuk is currently monitoring the health of Sawmill Creek through discharge measurements, sediment input mapping, fish passage mapping, benthic macroinvertebrate sampling and fish trapping.  A map of Sawmill Creek is set to be released by TWC this winter.
